North Star Fund has a limited amount of funding available for capacity building grants for current grantees. This is a pilot year, and we may not be able to offer these grants in future years.

These grants are designed to strengthen your organization's ability to fulfill its mission. They are designed to cover one-time investments that bring your capacity to another level. Some examples of how it might be used are (this list is not exhaustive):

  • Organizational Development:  to hire consultants to assist with fundraising, executive director transition, media and communications, special event planning, technology systems, community mapping, board development, or other organizational  infrastructure projects.
  • Community Organizing:  to hire consultants to develop membership structures or leadership  development programs, or to support staff with community organizing coaching or training.
  • Movement Building: to build specific skills your organization needs or  build solidarity or develop shared policy platforms by attending trainings or conferences, traveling for peer learning with organizers in other cities or regions, or organizing convenings.

Funds may be used to cover staff time required to complete a capacity building project. We encourage organizations to consider support and professional development programs for executive and non-executive level staff, whatever is appropriate for your capacity building needs.

North Star Fund can help identify consultants or coaches if desired.

Purpose of grants: The Let Us Breathe Fund supports work around police accountability and racial justice, as well as efforts to address historic disinvestment, lack of economic opportunities, and other discriminatory forces in Black communities.

The Fund prioritizes Black-led organizing groups, which is a reflection of North Star Fund's deeply-held belief that people directly affected by an issue or injustice should lead efforts for social change. Allied efforts should have a clear plan for solidarity work with Black communities. Multi-racial organizations should demonstrate how they support Black leadership within their organization and work.

Grant Amounts: $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000 (most of our 2018 grants were for $10,000)

Eligible Groups: Organizations that have received a grant from the Let Us Breathe Fund.

Priority will be given to groups that:

  • Have demonstrated strong base building work, and are growing a base of leaders in New York City;
  • Have a commitment to developing local leaders and can show the impact of their leadership development practice; and
  • Are having a political impact in the local New York ecosystem and are taking local or regional leadership.
